Fyr Bal Festival Guide: Ephraim's Midsummer Tradition in Door County

June 10, 2026 · 7 min read

What is the Fyr Bal Festival?

Fyr Bal (pronounced FEAR-bowl) is Ephraim's annual midsummer festival, held on the third weekend of June along the shore of Eagle Harbor in Door County, Wisconsin. The name comes from the Norwegian words for fire (fyr) and bonfire (bål), and the festival traces its roots to the Scandinavian custom of welcoming summer by lighting bonfires at the water's edge.

For the village of Ephraim — founded by Norwegian Moravian settlers in 1853 — Fyr Bal is the most important weekend of the year. It is part heritage celebration, part neighborhood block party, and entirely unmissable if you are visiting Door County in late June.

What does "Fyr Bal" mean?

In Old Norse and modern Norwegian, fyr bål literally means fire bonfire. The tradition itself is far older than the village of Ephraim. Across Scandinavia, communities have marked the summer solstice with bonfires for more than a thousand years — a way to ward off the long winter, gather the village, and celebrate the longest days of the year.

When Norwegian settlers arrived in Door County in the mid-19th century, they brought the custom with them. Ephraim has hosted Fyr Bal as a public festival since 1964.

When is Fyr Bal Festival?

Fyr Bal is held on the third Saturday of June every year, with events spilling into the surrounding Friday and Sunday. The main bonfire lighting takes place at dusk on Saturday — typically just after 9:00 PM, when the sun finally dips below the bluff.

Plan to arrive in Ephraim by mid-afternoon Saturday at the latest. Parking fills up fast and the village closes Highway 42 through downtown for the evening.

What happens during the festival

Friday evening

  • Welcome reception and Scandinavian music in the village park.
  • Local restaurants run special prix-fixe menus.

Saturday — the main day

  • Morning: arts and crafts fair on the South Shore Pier, with Door County makers, weavers, and woodworkers.
  • Afternoon: the Chieftain coronation in the village park. Each year Ephraim crowns a Viking Chieftain — usually a longtime resident who has contributed to the community — in a ceremony that closes with the new Chieftain banishing winter with a torch.
  • Late afternoon: live folk and Scandinavian music continues at the harbor.
  • Dusk (about 9:00 PM): the bonfires are lit. Volunteers light a chain of fires along the curve of Eagle Harbor — typically a dozen or more — and they burn down to embers over a couple of hours.
  • Night: fireworks over the harbor, weather permitting.

Sunday

  • A quieter morning of Scandinavian breakfasts and worship services at the historic Moravian church.

Visitor tips

  • Book lodging months ahead. Fyr Bal weekend is the busiest weekend of the Door County summer outside of the Fourth of July. Rooms in Ephraim itself are usually booked by April.
  • Arrive early. If you are driving in for the day, plan to be parked by 3:00 PM. The village uses overflow lots and a shuttle once downtown fills.
  • Bring layers. Even in late June, the wind off Green Bay turns cool after sundown. A light jacket or wool sweater is the right call for the bonfire lighting.
  • Watch the bonfires from the water side. The view from Anderson Dock and the South Shore Pier is unbeatable, and you stay clear of the smoke when the wind shifts.
  • Stay through Sunday. The morning after Fyr Bal is one of the quietest, most beautiful mornings of the year in Ephraim — the village is hushed, the harbor is glassy, and the bakeries open early.
