The geography of the peninsula is defined by the constant presence of water. To the west, the bay of Green Bay offers calmer, shallower waters; to the east, Lake Michigan presents a vast, often turbulent horizon. Since the mid-19th century, these shores have been guarded by stone and timber sentinels designed to guide sailors through the treacherous Death's Door passage. While many visitors see these landmarks through a car window, there is a particular satisfaction in reaching them under your own power. Exploring lighthouses Door County by bike allows the air to change from the scent of cedar woods to the sharp salt-less spray of the lake as you pedal.
Setting out from Ephraim, the most immediate and rewarding ride takes you into Peninsula State Park. You can begin at the park entrance just south of our grounds, following Shore Road as it winds along the perimeter of the headlands. This route is paved and relatively flat for the first few miles, offering glimpses of Eagle Harbor through the white birch trees.
About midway through the park loop, the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse appears. Built in 1868 from cream-colored brick, it sits atop a high bluff overlooking the Strawberry Islands. The ride here is immersive; you feel the drop in temperature as the canopy thickens and hear the rhythmic clinking of sailboat rigging from the water below. If you arrive during museum hours, you can tour the keeper’s residence, which is meticulously restored with 19th-century artifacts. After your visit, continue the loop toward Nicolet Beach for a break, or take the steeper climb toward Sven’s Bluff if your legs are feeling steady. The descent back toward the village of Fish Creek offers one of the most scenic views of the bay.
For those looking for a longer day in the saddle, a trek to the lakeside is essential. Leaving the quiet streets of Ephraim, you will head east toward Baileys Harbor. This cross-peninsula route takes you past quiet farmsteads and old cherry orchards that, if you arrive in May, are heavy with white blossoms.
Cana Island Lighthouse is perhaps the most photographed spot in the county, yet it remains difficult to access by large crowds due to its unique geography. The lighthouse sits on an island connected to the mainland by a rocky cobblestone causeway. Depending on the water levels of Lake Michigan, you may find the causeway dry, or you might need to wade through a few inches of clear, cold water—a refreshing reward after a twelve-mile ride. The tower itself is distinctive for its white-painted steel cladding, added in the early 1900s to protect the deteriorating brick. Climbing the 97 steps of the spiral staircase provides a panoramic view of the lake that no drone or camera can fully replicate.
If you prefer a ride with less elevation change, the area around Baileys Harbor offers the Ridges Range Lights. These are not the towering monoliths of Eagle Bluff or Cana Island, but rather two smaller lantern rooms that work in tandem to guide ships into the harbor. Biking through The Ridges Sanctuary allows you to see these unique structures while traversing one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in Wisconsin.
For the truly ambitious, continuing north from Baileys Harbor leads toward Newport State Park. As Wisconsin’s only formally designated Dark Sky Park, the roads here are shrouded by dense forest and remain remarkably quiet. While the Northport pier marks the end of the mainland, the ride back south through the rolling hills of Ellison Bay allows for a stop at a local orchard or a quiet park bench to watch the sunset over the bluffs.
Can I bike across the causeway to Cana Island? It is generally better to park your bike at the end of Cana Island Road and walk across the causeway. The stones can be slippery and unstable, and water levels often submerge the path. There are racks available for securing your bicycle near the visitor station.
How long does it take to bike from Ephraim to Peninsula State Park? The park entrance is less than a five-minute ride from our location. Once inside, the full Shore Road loop is approximately 10 miles, though you can easily extend this by exploring the inland forest trails.
Are there hills on the route to the lighthouses? Door County is characterized by the Niagara Escarpment, so you will encounter some elevation. The ride to Eagle Bluff has a few gradual inclines, while the route across the peninsula to Cana Island is mostly flat with some rolling terrain through the inland farmland.
